Chemical Peels in the Summer?!
The myth that you can’t get a chemical peel in the summer stems from the important aftercare instruction of avoiding prolonged sun exposure during skin recovery. Since summer is hot and sunny, it’s a seemingly valid concern that you should wait until the cooler months to get a chemical peel. In reality, your skin can handle a bit of sun exposure safely during recovery, as long as you wear sunscreen and take proper sun protection measures, like wearing a hat. These precautions are recommended year-round and at all times- not just after a peel.
Truth: The summer season can actually be a great time for a peel!
Chemical peels, induce skin regeneration and exfoliation by promoting skin cell turnover. As we age, cell turnover slows, but peels help by sloughing off old cells to reveal newer, fresher skin. The exfoliating acids in chemical peels stimulate new cell generation without triggering melanin production. Therefore, issues typically only arise from improper post-peel care, like not wearing SPF or spending too much time in the sun, which can lead to dark spots and hyperpigmentation (any time of the year).
Your approach to SPF and sun exposure after a peel should be the same as any other day. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that everyone over six months old wear sunscreen daily to prevent premature aging, sunburns, and skin cancer. As long as you protect your skin, your chemical peel results won’t be affected by the season.
What about the summer heat?
It’s true that prolonged sun exposure and intense heat should be minimized during peel recovery. The key words here are “prolonged” and “intense.” Everyday activities like running errands, driving, or taking a walk are fine if you use SPF. There are two types of heat to consider: environmental heat (like summer temperatures) and internally generated heat (like from exercise or saunas). While environmental heat can cause some sweating, it’s internally generated heat that really needs to be avoided during recovery.
Still skeptical? Consider this: if chemical peels weren’t safe in warmer temps, they wouldn’t be feasible in sunny states like California and Florida, where it’s warm year-round. Unless you’re planning a tropical escape, your skin can handle a summer peel.
Surprise: Summer peels may be even better for your skin!
Summer’s humidity acts as a natural moisturizer, offsetting the dryness and irritation that can follow even the gentlest peel. Dry or dehydrated skin, as well as skin prone to redness and sensitivity, can benefit from the extra moisture in the air during warmer months, making summer an ideal time for a peel.
Sun damage can occur any time of year, but it often seems worse in the summer. Treating dark spots, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin tone with a peel while the damage is fresh can prevent conditions like melasma from becoming deeply embedded in your skin. Remember, though, to avoid peels if your skin is sunburned. If you’ve had a sunny beach weekend or a tropical vacation, wait until your skin has recovered before getting a peel. We will help determine when your skin is ready, but a general rule of thumb is to wait at least two weeks.
When is the best time for a chemical peel?
Ultimately, the best time for a peel depends on you, your lifestyle, and your consultation. Skincare maintenance is a year-round commitment and getting a peel at least once a quarter is recommended. Plaza Aesthetics & Wellness offers a range of chemical peels perfect for treating sun damage on the face, décolleté, shoulders, and other areas.
